Properties of Substances

I Rationale:

Properties of substances are a factor in many of the space shuttle systems. The “beanie cap” that is located above the external tank prior to launch was designed to counteract the ice formation resulting from the super-cooled propellants used to launch the space shuttle. The swing arm engineer (featured engineer # 5) is responsible for the maintenance and proper functioning of the beanie cap as well as the Orbiter Access Arm. This lesson sequence uses a bit of chemistry, a bit of sleuthing, and some bits of candy to introduce/reinforce characteristic properties of substances. Integration of math skills is also addressed.
