Which console do you man in the Firing Room?
I am at the NASA Test Director console in the front of the Firing Room just below the Launch Director.
What system(s) do you monitor and control from that console?
I monitor many different systems depending on where we are in the launch countdown and/or if there is an issue with a specific system.
How are those systems used by the Space Shuttle?
For example, during loading of the External Tank, I scrutinize systems which monitor potential hazardous gas buildup in the vehicle, the plumbing and hardware used to transport the half million gallons of liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen to the ET, weather monitoring systems, as well as a host of others.
What are your responsibilities with regard to those systems?
I am responsible for the overall management of the launch countdown. The various system engineers report to me when they have problems with their systems or when they have completed significant events. I coordinate, integrate and approve all of the troubleshooting we do to resolve a problem. I am also responsible for managing rescue operations for the Astronauts and ground crews while they are at the pad. In addition, I manage the countdown clock including built-in or unplanned holds.
What was your most exciting or memorable experience while working in the Firing Room?
The most exciting time was being in the Firing Room for the John Glenn launch. There was a lot of excitement associated with the media and all of the important visitors who came to watch that launch.
